How to Homeschool in NYC

Steps to Homeschool

  1. Visit the NYC DOE Homeschool website.  The webpage not only has a lot of information on homeschooling, its also the place where you will find the Letter of Intent form.
  2. Send your Letter of Intent form. The link to the form changes but on the site you can find either the online form submission or downloadable PDF to submit. Once you submit the form, you technically can begin homeschooling. An automated response will be sent to your email address.
  3. Although you can technically begin homeschooling, if your child is enrolled in school, make sure you formally discharge your child from their school. Take all the steps necessary to ensure they are off the rosters and that everyone is aware that you are homeschooling. You do not want your child being marked absent from school.
  4. After you send the Letter of Intent, the district will ask you via email to submit an Individualized Home Instruction Plan (IHIP). This plan is basically where you tell the district how you intend to teach your child, what curriculum you will be using and what activities you will do. The IHIP is the plan you will be referring to during your quarterly reports.
  5. Make note of all due dates for quarterly reports. Communication with the district regarding homeschooling is all over email. Automated responses will be sent to your inbox. Save all documentation.
